FAQ

Do families need to be a member of Calvary Lutheran Church to enroll children in preschool?

No, families do not need to be a member to enroll your child in preschool. The members of Calvary Lutheran Church invite everyone in the community to explore this possibility.

What schedule does Calvary Lutheran Preschool use?

Our program follows the North Lawrence Community School District's calendar including the same vacation days, snow days, and similar exceptions.

Does my child need to be potty-trained in order to attend?

Yes. We require children to be able to use the restroom on their own. This supports independence and body-awareness. We help teach proper hygiene alongside using the restroom. If kids have an accident during the school day, they will be given clean clothes to change into.

What will my child experience in their class?

Our curriculum is a Gospel-centered Bible curriculum for Christian Preschools that directs students to God's grace through the cross of Jesus Christ. It also includes family activities to help the family grow together as they read, study, and apply God's Word.

Pre-K:  Kids will learn skills for Kindergarden to help them grow and succeed in school through play and structured learning. Some of the topics covered are:

  • Alphabet (upper and lowercase, phonics, and writing skills)
  • Numbers 1-20
  • Shapes and colors
  • Weekly bible lessons and chapel with Pastor
  • Full day students will also learn phonemics to facilitate early reading skills.

Jumpstart: Kids will learn the basics for school to prepare them as they grow. Kids will enjoy learning through play and structured learning. Some of the topics covered are:

  • Alphabet (capital letters)
  • Numbers 1-10
  • Shapes and colors
  • An introduction to Phonemics
  • Weekly bible lessons and chapel with Pastor

How does the day go for my child?

Each parent will be given a class schedule, that includes play and structured times. Learning through play is an important part of preschool. We consistently try to stay with this daily schedule so that your child feels secure, safe and knows what is happening during their day.

How do you handle child discipline in the classroom?

We firmly believe children should never be humiliated or feel rejected. If the undesirable behavior is ongoing or serious, the parent will be notified.

In response to these behaviors, we will:

  • Respect your child
  • Establish clear rules
  • Be consistent in enforcing rules
  • Use positive language to explain desired behavior
  • Give clear choices
  • Redirect your child to a new activity
  • Move your child to a time-out chair for no longer than one minute per year of your child's age, if necessary.

For more information, we will provide a school handbook which outlines school policies and other information upon request.
